The long-anticipated sequel to the 1984 cult classic mockumentary, “This is Spinal Tap,” is officially heading into production early next year. According to Variety, “This Is Spinal Tap 2” is set to begin filming in February 2024, with Rob Reiner returning to direct and starring alongside the original cast members – Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. The sequel was originally announced in May 2022, and despite several production delays, fans eagerly await the reunion of the infamous faux-rock band, Spinal Tap.

Reiner has hinted at the plot revolving around the fictional passing of Spinal Tap’s beleaguered manager, Ian Faith, played by Tony Hendra who sadly passed away in 2021. Faith’s fictional widow inherits a contract that obliges Spinal Tap to one final concert. Excitingly, music legends Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks are slated to make cameo appearances, adding to the star-powered lineup.

The original film, despite not being a significant box office success upon its release, gathered momentum through its home video distribution and has since amassed a loyal cult-like following. The Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2002, solidifying its status as a culturally significant piece.

Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks are suspected to also play roles in the sequel!

However, the upcoming sequel has stirred mixed reactions among the fan base. Despite the excitement for the band’s reunion, there is apprehension that the follow-up may not meet the high expectations set by the legendary original or worse – it could tarnish its legacy. The original film’s improvisational structure and laser-sharp wit have been deeply influential, transforming not just the film comedy genre, but the music culture as well. It served as a warning to musicians, a metaphor, and a descriptor.

As the audience waits for the official release date, one question remains: can “This Is Spinal Tap 2” strike the same chord as its predecessor? Only time will tell.
