Kmart Recalls Christmas Item After Skin Reactions and Hospitalisations

December 5, 2024 12:37 pm in by

Kmart has announced a recall of its Christmas-themed bedding after customers reported severe skin irritations and even hospitalizations. The recall affects the Mr & Mrs Claus Reversible Queen Size Bed Quilt Cover Set and the Christmas Elf Reversible Single Bed Quilt Cover Set, which are being pulled from shelves with full refunds available.

The recall follows reports from customers like one Queensland mother, whose family suffered from serious reactions after using the bedding. Her son developed asthma symptoms and her husband was hospitalized with chest pain after exposure to the bedding. “He was genuinely scared,” she recalled, adding that paramedics recognized the bedding as the source of several similar complaints, including rashes and chest pain.

Others have also reported burning eyes, stuffy noses, and even intense nausea and muscle pain. Kmart, which initially insisted the bedding was safe, decided to voluntarily withdraw the product after growing concerns about a strong chemical odor — described by some as “jet fuel.”

A Kmart spokesperson confirmed that while the bedding is safe, the company decided to act out of caution to protect customer well-being. Customers with affected products can contact Kmart Customer Service for refunds on 1800 124 125.
