Students from two Top End senior schools will once again be banned from entering Casuarina Square following fights and inappropriate behaviour.
The month-long ban begins on Monday with all students from Casuarina Senior College and Sanderson Middle School prohibited from entering the shopping centre.
It follows a 48-hour ban that was enforced in February to multiple high school and middle school students from across Darwin – which was also sparked by a spate of student fights throughout the centre.
Since the two-day ban was lifted, fights have started up again at the complex, and now the centre is taking a stand.
Casuarina Square Centre Manager Polly Lamond says both schools displayed inappropriate behaviour at the complex, and if this continues it could come with harsher consequences.
“Clearly, students from Casuarina Senior College and Sanderson Middle School didn’t get the message that we now have zero tolerance of school students misbehaving in the centre, so they won’t be allowed in for a month,” Ms Lamond says.
“This is strike two for these students and we will consider a permanent ban if they don’t get the message this time.”
The decision to ban both schools is also a move to protect shoppers and retail staff.
To prevent them from visiting the centre there will be guards on all entries, refusing the students unless they are with a parent or guardian.
If students are not in the immediate company of a parent or guardian they will be refused entry or moved on.
Casuarina Senior College and Sanderson Middle School students will be allowed back at Casuarina Square on April 3.
