Some of Australia’s top clay target shooters will be heading to the Territory to take part in the NT Trap Championships, at the end of the month.
Its limited to 210 shooters with around three quarters of competitors travelling from interstate to compete for a state sash and hall of fame points.
Members of clubs in Nhulunbuy, Katherine and Alice Springs will travel to take part and compete for a position to represent the NT in the Nationals.
The event runs from July 27 to July 30, at the Darwin Clay Target Club.
Darwin Clay Target Club Secretary Tania Harris says the competition has built a solid reputation.
“The Darwin Trap Championships have been running for a number of years now.
“The attraction is not only the opportunity for those “down south” to come to some great weather in winter but they get to experience Darwin and our lifestyle.”
Northern Territory Major Events Company CEO Suzana Bishop says the NT Trap Championships attracts some of the best shooters from around the country.
“The event is also an opportunity for our Territory shooters to compete against a larger competitor base without having to travel interstate.
“Occurring during the southern winter, competitors travel north to escape the cold weather and embrace the Top End lifestyle.
“Often these competitors stay to participate in other shooting events held around the same time and, of course, to experience our tourism offerings, in turn boosting our local economy.”
Coralie Brannelly, Palmerston Lions says the Combined Lions Clubs of Nightcliff, Darwin, Casuarina, Palmerston and Litchfield are supporters of this amazing sport.
“Lions members have been able to assist the Trap Championships with filling traps for a number of years. It is such an exciting time watching our future Olympians in the making.”
The annual event began in 1984 and has a massive prize pool of over $200,000.
The winner of last year’s double barrel shoot-off hit 414 targets in a row, to take out the event and set a new club record.
