A new and improved Darwin Civic and State Square precinct is a step closer to fruition, with the contractor announced for the project.
The NT Government has awarded local company Sitzler an $88 million contract to build the Northern Territory Art Gallery, which will boast a grand veranda with cafes and rooms for festivals and events.
Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech says the new facility will showcase the Territory’s art scene.
“The new Northern Territory Art Gallery will provide space for exhibition that the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) does not currently have and will allow us to share more of our immense collection and touring exhibitions,” Mr Paech says.
Sitzler will also plan and design the remaining elements of the precinct including:
- A Central Heart – a shaded, flexible and centrally located space for special community events and everyday enjoyment
- A tropical tree walk – a walkway along Smith Street with tall shelters for sun and rain protection
- Expansive event lawns – suitable for a vast array of festivals and events
- Forecourts – generous open spaces with pedestrian access to Parliament House and the Supreme Court with welcoming and cooling water features
Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler says the project will support more than 320 jobs during construction with the end result a vibrant heart for the city.
“One that will attract locals, visitors, artists and businesses and provide an enhanced pedestrian link between the Darwin CBD and the Waterfront.”
When complete the NT Art Gallery will have a dual English and Aboriginal name, with Indigenous groups and stakeholders to be consulted on suggestions.
The $145 million Civic and State Square revitalisation, which aims to transform the precinct into a welcoming and green area, is part of the Darwin City Deal, a partnership between all levels of government.
