Cultural respect is what BWS Darwin City shoppers are being reminded of after they buy their drinks.
With Larrakia Nation displaying new signage and handing out flyers to customers at BWS, it’s hoped this will be a reminder to everyone to be respectful when purchasing alcohol.
The partnership with Larrakia Nation and Endeavour Group features the seven-step guide of the Larrakia cultural protocols for respect displayed on signs at the entry of the bottle shop.
Larrakia Nation CEO Michael Rotumah says they’ve been developing a close relationship with Endevour Group for a while now, but the fatal stabbing of a BWS Darwin bottle shop worker pushed this initiative.
“The driving factor to hand out the Larrakia protocols was the result of the incident at the BWS drive through bottle shop at the airport tavern.”
The feedback from the community since the signage is up has been positive, and Mr Rotumah says they’re looking to extend this partnership with other Darwin bottle shops in the future.
“We see this as a bit of a long-term partnership with not only Endeavour Group, but we’d like to think other areas of the hospitality industry who are selling alcohol are going to get on board and work collaboratively with us.”
He says a key takeaway from this partnership is for Territorian’s to be mindful the next time they purchase alcohol.
“Anyone living in Darwin or visiting Darwin no matter what colour you are, just be respectful to those people who are serving you, they’re doing their job which includes responsible service.”
