A female police officer has allegedly been bitten in a confrontation with a young woman under the influence.
Officers were reportedly conducting a patrol at a Leanyer shopping complex on Monday morning, where they found a 14-year-old girl who they say was significantly under the influence of a volatile substance and needed care.
While officers tried to restrain her and take her to protective custody, the juvenile allegedly bit the officer on the wrist and then on the finger, which pierced the skin twice.
The officer would later need medical treatment, including a tetanus shot.
NT police Commander Daniel Bacon says, “This incident highlights the incredibly difficult and dangerous positions that frontline officers are put in every day.
“What is often not considered with offences of this nature is that this officer now has the mental anguish of not knowing what, if any, diseases she may have contracted which will affect her and her relationship with her partner for a considerable time until tests determine otherwise,” Commander Bacon says.
“It will also prevent her donating blood now for 3 months, something of which the officer is passionate about to assist others in giving back to the Community,” the police commander says.
“Offences of this nature are disgusting and have far reaching repercussions on our officers.”
Investigations are ongoing.
