Police have arrested a man after multiple arson incidents across the Top end.
It’s alleged the 29-year-old was involved in a robbery at a Katherine Service station on Tuesday afternoon and was using a white Toyota Hilux to then drive dangerously around the town.
He is further accused of breaking into a business on the Stuart Highway in Birdum on Tuesday night, with police finding the Hilux burnt outside of the premises.
A red Toyota Landcruiser was then allegedly stolen from the same location, with police receiving reports of the car being seen travelling along the highway and approaching Darwin’s Rural Area on Wednesday afternoon.
Police from Darwin Traffic Operations, Dog Operations Unit, Palmerston, Batchelor and Adelaide River General Duties and Strike Force Trident were all deployed.
The Landcruiser was eventually stopped in Humpty Doo with police using Tyre Deployment Devices.
During this time it’s alleged the man got out of the car and then set it alight, which then caused surrounding bushland to set a blaze, before hiding in nearby bushes.
Members from the Dog Squad found the man a short time later – meanwhile firefighters were extinguishing the car and the surrounding bushland.
The 29-year-old remains in police custody and is set to be charged with a string of serious offences.
