Almost 200 people have been arrested in a massive police operation at Katherine.

Operation Oxley, which began last year, has already conducted a significant amount of arrests, with the Territory’s chief minister impressed.

28 breath testing stations have been established, with 2,337 breath tests completed; as well as 243 traffic apprehensions, 72 traffic infringement notices issued, 65 licensed premises patrols, and about 851 litres of liquor destroyed, News Corp reports.

In total, 199 arrests have been made for a raft of offences since the operation began on December 2.

NT’s Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says last year the operation was focused on reducing property crime and antisocial behaviour and has been delivering strong results since its commencement.

“While on the ground in Katherine, I spoke with frontline officers about the challenges they face and the opportunities to reduce crime and address its root causes,” Ms Finocchiaro says.

“Our police are working tirelessly, and I thank them for their dedication to serving and protecting Territorians,” she says.

“Our government is committed to supporting the police with the powers and resources they need, following eight long years of neglect.”
