A former NT Police Commissioner has died after a car and bike collision in South Australia.
Emergency services were called to reports a male cyclist had suffered serious injuries in a crash in Glen Osmond, Adelaide on Sunday.
The 72-year-old cyclist, who’s been identified as Paul White, died at the scene.
A 61-year-old driver from St Georges is assisting police with their investigation.
His vehicle was towed from the scene for examination according to SA Police.
Mr White, who was also the CEO of NT Police Fire and Emergency Services retired in October 2009 after almost eight years of service in the role.
He started as a cadet with the South Australia Police Force in 1968 and rose to the rank of Assistant Commissioner before commencing work in the NT.
Acting Commissioner and CEO Murray Smalpage has expressed condolences for Mr White.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Mr White’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
The NT Police Association (NTPA) Acting President Owen Blackwell says he “is deeply shocked and saddened” to hear of Mr White’s passing.
“Mr White was a much-loved and well-respected Commissioner, who will be fondly and respectfully remembered, especially for the introduction of intelligence-led policing in the Northern Territory,” Mr Blackwell says.
“On behalf of our members and the NTPA Executive, I offer our deepest condolences to Mr White’s family, and especially to his wife Cynthia.”
Mr Blackwell also made special mention of a letter to the NTPA from Mr White upon his retirement in 2009.
“The eight years at the helm of the NT Police Force was the highlight of my 41 year career in policing and I will always cherish the many great memories and challenges during my time as Commissioner,” Mr White wrote.
The NT Police Museum and Historical Society has also taken to social media, expressing condolences.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife Cynthia and family,” the post said.
